Hari Batik Nasional: A Tribute to Our Batik Artisans
Fifteen years ago, on the 2nd of October 2009, UNESCO recognized Batik as an “intangible cultural heritage,” marking a monumental moment for Indonesia. Since 2017, OE has cherished this time of year as a celebration of not only Batik itself but the entire ecosystem that brings each piece to life. For us, Hari Batik Nasional is more than just a recognition of the final product; it is a tribute to the hands and hearts behind every thread and stroke of wax that form the Batik you wear today.
Stepping in the shoes of our Batik artisans
This year, in celebration of Hari Batik Nasional, OE partnered with Pullman Jakarta Central Park to host a Batik Tulis workshop, inviting members of our beloved OE community to walk in the shoes of our artisans. The experience was profoundly enlightening, revealing the care and devotion our artisans invest in each piece.
During the workshop, participants created Batik Tulis using OE x Wilsen Willim’s signature pinwheel pattern, a symbol of joy amidst adversity. The pinwheel serves as a reminder that life’s challenges can be transformed into strength and beauty. As Wilsen Willim himself has emerged from moments of difficulty into light, the ‘Siklus’ collection’s pattern encourages us all to embrace each stage of our personal journeys.
After outlining their designs with Malam, participants were free to infuse their Batik with vibrant colors of their choice. The collective results, each unique and beautifully imperfect, have been transformed into an art installation now displayed at Pullman Jakarta Central Park. Together, these individual pieces form a vibrant mosaic, representing the spirit of collaboration and creativity that lies at the heart of Batik.
Extending the Hari Batik Nasional with the new ‘Siklus 2.0’
This year’s Hari Batik Nasional extends into a two-day celebration, highlighted by the official launch of the bold and elevated ‘Siklus 2.0’ collection on October 4, 2024. Crafted in response to the overwhelming love for the first ‘Siklus’ collection, Wilsen Willim has reimagined ‘Siklus 2.0’ with bolder, more fashion-forward silhouettes, designed to be worn on special occasions.
“My hope for Siklus 2.0 remains the same: to continue uplifting the artisans in Pekalongan while creating contemporary Batik clothing—pieces that are easy to wear and versatile for any occasion, particularly for the younger generation. I hope this collection reaches an even wider audience,” shared Wilsen Willim.
In this new chapter, OE x Wilsen Willim expands its vision with more diverse offerings in the Men’s Collection. A standout piece, the Red Abiyya Batik Outer, showcases the fusion of tradition and modernity. Inspired by the classic Kebaya Kartini, this design offers the versatility to be styled as both an outerwear piece and a top, incorporating masculine cuts that reflect Wilsen Willim’s innovative approach to Batik fashion.
